Open Vs. Closed MRIs

Open MRIs have gained a lot of popularity in recent years. We can understand why! If it is your first time in an MRI machine, it can be a little intimidating to go into the MRI tube. But are open MRIs everything they are said to be? Or are you better off with a closed MRI? Our Pittsburgh imaging service weighs in on the open vs. closed debate and helps you determine which one is best for you.

THE PROS AND CONS OF OPEN AND CLOSED

OPEN MRIS

Open MRIs might be appealing because they are less likely to make you feel claustrophobic during your scan. An open MRI machine isn’t enclosed like the traditional machine, allowing more light and air to the patient during the scan. However, this set up is a trade-off when it comes to the quality of the images. They might not provide as detailed of an image to the diagnostics team.

CLOSED MRIS

Closed MRIs take higher-quality, more detailed images of the body than an open MRI does. This can help make a more accurate diagnosis, though you’ll have to overcome any feelings of claustrophobia in the enclosed tube. Most of our patients report feeling totally comfortable in the machine, thanks in large part to our experienced technicians.

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

In general, the higher the quality of image the better, and for that reason North Pittsburgh Imaging Specialists offers only closed MRI machines in our facility. However, if you suffer from extreme claustrophobia, we can recommend a facility that offers open MRI imaging.
